Details: According to Medvedev, Russia might use nuclear weapons if its own territory is attacked with nuclear weapons.

Additionally, Russia might use nuclear weapons in case of any other use of nuclear weapons against Russia or its allies.

The third scenario involves any encroachment on critical infrastructure resulting in the paralysation of  Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces.

The fourth and final scenario is an act of aggression against Russia or its allies which would threaten the existence of the country.

Background:

  • On 27 February, the 4th day of war, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to transfer Russia’s Strategic Deterrence Forces to a special combat duty state. According to the Russian Defence Ministry’s website, the Strategic Deterrence Force "is designed to deter aggression against Russia and its allies, as well as to defeat (to prevail over) the aggressor, including in a war with nuclear weapons." The Strategic Deterrence Forces include the Strategic Offensive Force and the Strategic Defence Force.
  • On 2 March, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that World War III would be a nuclear war.
