President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasises that the authorities are doing everything to save people in Mariupol.

Details: Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he held an important meeting concerning Mariupol with all the leaders of the security cabinet on Friday, 15 April.

More details: The meeting was attended by: Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine; Serhii Shaptala, Chief of the General Staff; Kyrylo Budanov, Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate; Yurii Lebid, Commander of the National Guard; Denys Monastyrskyi, Minister of Internal Affairs; Ivan Bakanov, Head of the Security Service of Ukraine; Andrii Yermak, Head of the Presidential Office; Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council; and Davyd Arakhamiia, the head of our delegation at the negotiations.

Background:

  • Since 1 March, Mariupol has been blockaded by Russian troops who have caused a humanitarian disaster in the city and are carrying out genocide of the Ukrainian people. So far, it has not been possible to break the siege or deliver military aid to the Ukrainian soldiers defending Mariupol.
  • On 13 April, leaders of the Azov regiment and the 36th Separate Marine Brigade recorded a joint video address from Mariupol and confirmed that they were able to combine their efforts in defending the city.
  • On 14 April, Sviatoslav Palomar, Deputy Commander of the "Azov" Regiment,  stated that it is possible to break the siege of Mariupol and that fighters were waiting for decisive actions from the country’s military and political command in this regard.

On 15 April, Serhiy Volyna, Commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade, called on the Ukrainian government to break the siege of Mariupol using political or military means as soon as possible.
