Background:

  • A massive fire, visible from all over Mariupol, broke out at the "Azovstal" plant on 2 May.
  • At noon on 1 May, international journalists reported that evacuation buses with 50 civilians had left Mariupol, heading to territory controlled by combatants of the unrecognised "Donetsk People’s Republic".
  • Later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the evacuation of civilians from the bunkers of the "Azovstal" plant in Mariupol had begun, with the assistance of the United Nations. "The first group of about 100 people is already on its way to the controlled territory," he said.
