After the explosions at a depot in Crimea, the invaders have set up a checkpoint at the approach to the Kerch/Crimean bridge, where they are checking the documents and cars of those who want to leave.

Details: According to Savchenko, after the explosion at an ammunition depot, about 38,000 cars left for Russia from the temporarily occupied Crimea. Earlier, after the explosions in Novofedorivka, about 37,000 cars left for Russia.

Background: 

  • On the morning of 16 August, explosions rocked the Dhzankoi district of Russian-occupied Crimea. Some reports indicate that a Russian ammunition point in the village of Maiske had been hit.
  • At lunchtime, Russian mass media reported new explosions on Crimea – this time at a military airbase near Simferopol.
  • The Ministry of Defence of Russia has stated that the cause of the explosions at the ammunition storage site was sabotage. The occupiers have introduced a state of emergency in Dzhankoi district. 
  • The invaders of Crimea have begun to evacuate people.
  • Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, said that the Crimean bridge must be destroyed as a legitimate military target.
