Russia launches 40 missiles at Kyiv, Ukraine’s air defence struck down 37

On the morning of December 16, over 40 Russian missiles flew near Kyiv during the massive missile attack on Ukraine. Ukrainian air defence troops struck down 37 of them.

Quote: "Over 40 missiles were detected near Kyiv; 37 were shot down. According to our calculations, this is one of the most large-scale missile attacks since the beginning of the full-scale war."

Details: Information about the strikes will be available later, Shamanov said. The Kyiv City Military Administration admits there may be several more waves of Russian attacks later during the day. 

Background:

  • In the small hours of December 16, an air-raid siren sounded through the whole territory of Ukraine, except the temporarily occupied Crimea. Kyiv city Mayor Vitalii Klitschko confirmed explosions in Holosiivskyi, Desnianskyi and Dniprovskyi districts.
  • Due to damage to the energy infrastructure, there are interruptions in water supply in all districts of the capital.
  • Subway in Kyiv currently serves as a shelter; the metro traffic is down for now.
  • Emergency power outages have been introduced throughout Ukraine, including in the capital, the President’s Office of Ukraine reported.
