Russia wants to leave Ukrainians without electricity by New Year – Ukraine’s PM

Denys Shmyhal, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, has warned fellow citizens that Russia may launch new attacks on Ukraine’s energy facility so that Ukrainians meet 2023 in the darkness; therefore, the authorities are planning to triple the number of invincibility centres (to 15,000).

Quote: "Russian terrorists will do everything to leave Ukrainians without electricity by the New Year. It is important for them that Christmas and New Year in Ukraine pass in darkness. Therefore, we must prepare for new attacks."

Details: The Prime Minister has pointed out that "it is simply impossible to give any forecasts on the restoration of stable power supply in conditions of the power system being attacked almost every day", so local authorities "should also not create any inflated expectations."

He has added that "along with the attacks on our energy sector, Russia is conducting information and psychological operations to sow panic and despair."

Quote: "Therefore, we tell people the truth that the situation is difficult; that there may be electricity only for a few hours per day; that the situation in the energy system may either improve or worsen depending on intensity and frequency of new Russian attacks.

In these extremely difficult conditions, the invincibility centres really become a salvation for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians. The government has defined unified standards of their operation throughout Ukraine. People will have access to the same set of services. These are heating, communication, access to water and electricity.

Currently, more than 5,000 invincibility centres are already functioning. We plan to triple the number in the near future."

Details: Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister, will lead the Coordination headquarters and deal with the topic of invincibility centres’ deployment.

Shmyhal has also asked Herman Halushchenko, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, to present the results of an analysis regarding fair distribution of electricity across the oblasts. The relevant body was created in the Ministry of Energy exactly for providing the fair distribution of electricity on all levels.
