Putin demotes Surovikin, replacing him with Gerasimov as commander of war in Ukraine

Sergei Surovikin was dismissed from the position of commander of the Russian Armed Forces in the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, was appointed to this position, while Surovikin became his deputy.

Details: RIA Novosti reported that General Surovikin, Oleg Salyukov, Chief of the Ground Forces General, and General Kim, Deputy Chief of the General Staff Colonel, have been appointed as Gerasimov's deputies.

The Ministry of Defence called this rotation "an increase in the level of leadership of the special military operation".

They said that the new assignments are related to "expanding the scale of the tasks to be solved" and "the need to organise closer cooperation between the types and branches of the armed forces".
