Quote from KIIS: "89% of Ukrainians now want to see Ukraine become a member of NATO, and the vast majority in all oblasts support this step, ranging from 79% in the East to 93% in the West. It means society has finally consolidated on this issue and is demonstrating a unified view."

Details: Meanwhile, only 18% of respondents would accept giving up joining NATO for the sake of peace, while 76% of respondents would find such a price unacceptable.

Sociologists note that there is also a consensus in terms of the regional perspective, ranging from 67% in the East to 81% in the West, that such a concession is unacceptable for peace.

KIIS also compared how the attitude of Ukrainians has changed towards receiving security guarantees instead of joining NATO.

In May 2022, 39% insisted on only joining NATO, while 42% considered it acceptable to receive "security guarantees" instead. By May 2023, public opinion had changed significantly, as the share of those who insisted on NATO membership had increased to 58%. At the same time, the percentage of those who would accept "security guarantees" dropped to 29%.

Sociologists emphasise that those who insist on joining NATO prevail in all of Ukraine's oblasts.

The survey took place from 26 May to 5 June. A total of 1,029 Ukrainians aged 18 and older living in the government-controlled areas of Ukraine were interviewed by telephone. The sampling error under normal circumstances does not exceed 3.4%. Another survey was conducted by KIIS on 10-21 May. A total of 2,509 people were interviewed by telephone. The sampling error under normal circumstances does not exceed 2.4%.
