UNESCO mission arrives in Odesa after Russian attack

A UNESCO mission has arrived in Odesa after Russia shelled the historic centre of the city.

Details: The City Council clarified that UNESCO representatives arrived in Odesa to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused to cultural and religious buildings by missile attacks carried out by Russian forces from 19 to 23 July.

The mayor's office says the mission will record and document the consequences of Russian attacks.

The mission will work under the leadership of Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, UNESCO coordinator in Kyiv, accompanied by experts.

They are inspecting the locations of objects damaged in Russian attacks.

The City Council reminds that about 50 objects have been damaged, so the work will be intensive.

Background:

  • The Air Force of Ukraine reported that the Russians fired 19 missiles of various types, including five Oniks missiles, on Odesa Oblast overnight. Air defence forces shot down nine missiles.
  • The Transfiguration Cathedral was destroyed in another Russian attack on Odesa on early 23 July.
  • Twenty-five architectural monuments were damaged overnight in Odesa's centre, which is under UNESCO protection.
  • One person was killed and 20 were injured, including 4 children, in Saturday night’s attack on Odesa. The building of the Greek consulate also suffered damage.
