The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has detained a Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) agent who was preparing new Russian attacks on Kyiv’s thermoelectric power plants. He turned out to be a contractor for one of the military units of the National Guard of Ukraine.

Quote by SSU: "The suspect is a contractor of one of the military units of the National Guard who was remotely recruited by the Russian secret service in January this year. In order to involve the soldier in an unofficial cooperation, the FSB has engaged their member (the head of an undercover group). He turned out to be a former National Guard member who resigned from the service due to his health condition and left Ukraine for a European country. There he started working for FSB."

Details: While outside Ukraine’s borders, the perpetrator gave instructions to his agent in Kyiv. Specifically, he asked him to collect the geolocations of thermoelectric power plants in Kyiv.

The Russians were also interested in the technical condition of energy facilities and their protection level by the Defence Forces of Ukraine.

The agent sent all the information to his handler via messenger in the form of photos with a description of the security system.

For each fulfilled task, both people involved were paid from US$100 to US$1,000 by their handler at FSB. The sum depended on the complexity of the "work" done and the importance of the information obtained.

Reportedly, the Russians were collecting this information to prepare for new missile attacks on Kyiv in the cold weather.

The Russian agent was detained during a multi-stage special operation while he was performing a mission for the Russians.

During the search at his place of residence in Kyiv, computer equipment and a mobile phone with proof of reconnaissance and sabotage activity in favour of Russia were found.

Both suspects were served with a notice of suspicion under Art. 28.2 and 111.2 (treason committed under martial law by prior conspiracy by a group of people) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The detained agent is being held in custody; he is likely to be sentenced to life in prison.
