Kremlin: Russia is not pursuing Anchorage deal compliance but "victory"
Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, has said Moscow is seeking "victory" and the achievement of its own goals, rather than the fulfilment of the agreements reached during the meeting between Putin and Donald Trump in Anchorage.
Source: Ushakov in an interview with propagandist Pavel Zarubin, as reported by Kremlin-aligned Russian news agency Interfax, citing the Vesti news website
Quote: "We are not waiting for these agreements to be fulfilled, we are waiting for victory. We are waiting for the realisation of our own goals."
Details: Ushakov accused "one of the parties" to the Anchorage agreements of being unable to fulfil them.
"Currently, one party, as before, is adhering to the agreements reached in Anchorage, while the other party, judging by all indications, appears to be unable to fully follow its part of the path and fulfil the agreements," Putin's aide said.
He noted that certain agreements had been discussed during the Anchorage meeting – one party was to carry out one part of the work and the other was to go another part of the way.
Background:
- On 15 June, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia expects a new visit from US special envoys and wants to hear how Washington intends to implement the agreements reached between Putin and Trump in Anchorage in summer 2025 on ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
- In March, Lavrov said that the atmosphere of talks between the US and Russia following the leaders' meeting in Alaska had been constructive and friendly, but that now "the spirit of Anchorage is evaporating".
- Trump and Putin met on 15 August 2025 at a military base in the city of Anchorage, Alaska. This meeting ended without any agreements being reached or a ceasefire in Ukraine being announced, despite statements about "significant progress".
- On 16 August 2025, following the talks with Putin, Trump held a call first with Zelenskyy, and then with him and European leaders together.
- According to Bloomberg, during the call with European leaders and Zelenskyy, Trump said that Putin continued to demand the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the entire territory of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, but was prepared to freeze the front line in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts.
- Zelenskyy has repeatedly stated that Ukraine will not agree to territorial concessions in exchange for a ceasefire. He stated that Donbas would simply become a staging ground for the Russians for a future new offensive, since Putin has no intention of ending the war.
