Quote: "Yesterday there was a conversation with Jared [Kushner] and with Steve Witkoff. Kyrylo Budanov, [Serhii] Kyslytsia and [Rustem] Umierov were also there.
We discussed the possibility of a meeting, and there are several plans from the US on ending the war. They will share these ideas with us.
We will have a meeting, I think they want to share these ideas with us and with the Russians too. I don't yet know when this meeting will be. I think most likely this meeting will take place in the US with the American side.
There are several dates, we just need to see that everything fits with everyone's schedules. I think there will be a meeting in the coming days or so."
Details: Zelenskyy also believes that a new trilateral meeting between representatives of Ukraine, the US and Russia should take place before the autumn.
According to the president, if it depended on Ukraine, this meeting would have already taken place in July: "But not everything depends on us."
Background:
- On 22 July, Zelenskyy held a phone call with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, representatives of US President Donald Trump, during which the sides discussed stepping up diplomatic efforts to bring peace closer.
- US involvement in negotiations regarding Russia's war against Ukraine has largely stalled since the start of the US and Israeli war against Iran. A visit to Kyiv that Trump's envoys were expected to make "after Easter" never took place.
- On 2 July, Zelenskyy reported that over the previous two days, talks had taken place between National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umierov and Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law.
- Recent weeks have seen a noticeable shift in the tone of the US president and his administration towards Ukraine. A notable breakthrough was Trump's pledge to grant Ukraine licences to produce Patriot missiles.
