Russia threatens UK with strikes on military targets over weapons and technology supplies to Ukraine

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has threatened that Russia could attack UK military targets in Ukraine and "beyond its borders" in response to Ukrainian strikes in which it alleges British-made weapons were used.

Quote from Zakharova: "Any British military facilities and equipment in Ukraine and beyond its borders could become targets in response to Ukrainian strikes using British weapons [Russia has provided no evidence of this – ed.] on Russian territory."

Details: Zakharova, who regularly accuses the West of supporting Ukraine, claimed that the UK "will not be able to evade responsibility" for supplying Ukraine with long-range Storm Shadow missiles and technology for their production.

Moscow's threats came after UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced on 24 August that the UK would share Storm Shadow missile production technology with Ukraine.

The following day, Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin's adviser Andrei Fedorov said that British factories producing drones and missile components could face attacks from "unknown sources".

Background:

• Moscow has repeatedly threatened London over its military assistance to Ukraine. Russia previously accused the UK of a deliberate drive towards escalation after media reports claimed that British-made drones had been used in strikes on targets in Russia.
