According to Prokopenko: "No one trusts the occupiers, so I am calling on politicians from across the civilised world to organise a green corridor, to provide security guarantees for the immediate evacuation of civilians and wounded soldiers, and to allow the removal of the bodies of fallen soldiers, who must be buried with military honours."

Details: The Azov Regiment also published a video in which civilians and children are shown hiding from Russian troops on the territory of the Azovstal plant.

Earlier: Several days ago, Russian occupying forces once again offered Ukrainian troops defending Mariupol a chance to surrender.

Background:

  • Mariupol has been under Russian siege since 1 March. Russian troops are relentlessly shelling the city in an attempt to gain full control over it.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine said that talks were being held to find ways to help Ukrainian troops defending Mariupol.
  • He also stated that the loss of Ukrainian troops in Mariupol might put an end to the peace talks with Russia.
  • On 17 April, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the army of the Russian Federation was likely preparing for a naval landing operation in Mariupol.
