Background:

  • On the morning of 30 June, Pivden [South] Operational Command announced that the Russian army was hastily evacuating the remnants of the garrison from Zmiinyi Island after it was attacked by the Ukrainian military.
  • The Russian authorities later claimed that they had "completed their mission on Zmiinyi Island" and were withdrawing the garrison stationed there "as a goodwill gesture".
  • Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said that the Russian occupiers had fled from Zmiinyi Island after Ukrainian defenders launched multiple attacks on it, some of them using Ukrainian Bohdana howitzers.
