Russians a long way from reality in their investigation of Crimean Bridge explosion

Vasyl Maliuk, acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine, has stated that Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine was not responsible for the explosion on the Crimean Bridge that occurred on 8 October.

Details: The acting head of the Security Service was asked whether Ukraine’s Security Service had anything to do with the "cotton" [i.e. the explosion; Russian propaganda, initially refusing to use the word ‘vzryv’ (explosion), used ‘khlopok’ (a bang) instead. However, ‘khlopok’ also means ‘cotton’, and this has since become a meme - ed.], or with the "self-destruction" of collaborators in the occupied territories. He answered, "We Ukrainians just like cotton a lot...  There’s even some in a vase in my office. But is it our fault that the Russians don’t know how to handle it properly?"

According to Maliuk, the Russian side is demonstrating its lack of professionalism in the investigation of the incident on the Crimean Bridge.

Quote from Maliuk: "I’m talking about the pseudo-investigation they are conducting into the incident on the Crimean Bridge. In their ‘investigation’, they came to the conclusion that my colleague from the security bloc, Kyrylo Budanov, and Defence Intelligence as a whole were supposedly involved in the explosion on the bridge. I can assure you that this is not true. And we understand that the Russians are a long way away from reality.

In the temporarily occupied territories, there are explosions here and there. Some people drink low-quality coffee, some fill their cars with low-quality fuel. It is clear that certain processes are taking place.

And on the Crimean Bridge, some truck was probably filled with the wrong fuel, and they have what they have."

Details: Maliuk added that he cannot disclose the details of such incidents or who is behind them, as that could endanger concerned patriots.

"Everything has its time, and we’ll talk in detail after the victory," Maliuk concluded .

Background:

  • On the morning of 8 October, a large fire broke out on the railway section of the Crimean Bridge. The Russian occupation authorities in Crimea claimed that a truck had exploded on the bridge and the fire spread to a train that was passing alongside. The road surface was seriously damaged.
  • Ukrainska Pravda sources reported that the Security Service of Ukraine was apparently behind the explosion, but officially no one from the Ukrainian government accepted responsibility for it.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine’s Security Service of blowing up the Crimean Bridge.
  • On 12 October, Russia’s FSB reported that eight people had been detained for the explosion on the Crimean Bridge, and alleged that Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and Kyrylo Budanov, its head, were responsible for orchestrating the explosion.
