Zelenskyy on Odesa military commissar: This person should not be in the recruiting system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, commenting on the Spanish property of the family of Odesa military commissar Yevhen Borysov, said that "this person should definitely not be in the recruiting system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine."

Quote: "I just held a Supreme Commander-in-Chief's Staff meeting. Justice is also a very important point of our discussion at the Staff meeting. Issues concerning military commission chiefs, in particular the scandal with... a figure in Odesa. This person should definitely not be in the recruitment system of the Armed Forces, it is very unpleasant, frankly immoral, and wrong that this person remained in his position despite everything.

I've instructed Commander-in-Chief Zaluzhnyi to remove this person from his post. And First Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Pavliuk has been instructed to organize an inspection of this entire system of military commissions. It is a pity that the Staff meeting's attention and time now have to be spent on such issues."

Details: He also reported that the situation on the front line was reviewed in detail at the Staff meeting – all main fronts, supply of ammunition, artillery.

The president also honoured the soldiers of the 35th Marine Brigade.

Quote: "A brigade that performs extremely difficult tasks. Guys who fight exactly the way Ukrainian soldiers should fight. Senior sailor Viacheslav Imanhulov and junior lieutenant Serhii Pienov – thank you, guys, for your exemplary strength and courage in the battles in Donetsk Oblast. This is exactly what our soldiers, Ukrainian soldiers, should be like. Well done!

And I am asking each and every one: please honour the memory of our two paratroopers of the 35th Brigade. Especially brave, especially strong. They gave their lives for our country, for our people right now – in the battles in June, and Ukraine should remember them. Captain Ivan Kotsur... Eternal memory! Senior Lieutenant Oleksandr Kazandzhi... Eternal memory!"

Background:

  • In the investigation "The Spanish Battalion". Ukrainska Pravda pays a visit to the Odesa military commissar and other Ukrainian millionaires by Mykhailo Tkach, an Ukrainska Pravda journalist, it was revealed that during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the family of Yevhen Borysov, head of Odesa Military Enlistment Office, bought real estate and cars worth millions of dollars in the coastal area of Spain. This was substantiated by extracts from Spanish registers, though Borysov himself claims he has no idea whether his family owns property in Spain.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief on 23 June, where he listened to the reports of the commanders and instructed Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhny to dismiss Odesa military commissar Yevhen Borysov, who, as discovered by Ukrainska Pravda, has real estate worth millions of dollars in Spain.
  • Natalia Humeniuk, head of the press centre of the Pivden (South) Operational Command, reported that an internal investigation against Borysov has found no grounds for his removal from office.
