Ex-PoW commander meets with personnel and will soon return to action – Azov Regiment

Lieutenant Colonel Denys "Redis" Prokopenko, Commander of the Azov Brigade of the National Guard, has met with personnel after returning from Türkiye and intends to take up his duties in the near future.

Quote from Prokopenko: "While I was in captivity, I said that for me, this war would not end until we got our last soldier back from captivity and restored Ukraine's borders to the borders of 1991.

Details: Prokopenko is reported to be currently undergoing rehabilitation and "will resume his duties shortly".

 

During the meeting with personnel, he stressed that the main efforts today should be focused on combat training and replenishing the unit with personnel, equipment and weapons.

Background:

  • On 8 July, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the military commanders who defended the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works and then stayed in Türkiye after being released from Russian captivity as part of an exchange would be returning to Ukraine.
  • That evening, the president arrived in Lviv together with the commanders.
  • While in Lviv, Prokopenko stated that he would return to the front.
