Ukraine may not be fully satisfied with the outcomes of the NATO Summit that has begun in the US capital.

Details: Answering a question about the prospects of Ukraine's accession to NATO at a briefing for the Polish press, Sikorski admitted that this is a "difficult issue" as "there is nothing more dangerous than unreliable security guarantees".

Sikorski said NATO currently believes that Ukraine can only join the Alliance once the war has ended. Consequently, the minister noted, Kyiv is likely to remain unsatisfied with the "bridge to NATO" proposed at the summit, as it will only be content when it achieves victory in the war.

"But we are doing a lot to make it happen," he said.

Sikorski added that the allies will commit to "huge" materiel aid to Ukraine at the summit, amounting to US$40 billion a year, and a group of countries, including Poland, will be formed to sign a security cooperation agreement with Ukraine.

"First of all, we will show that we are united. NATO was created to deter Russian aggression. Russia is aggressive again. NATO won the first time, it will win the second time," he concluded.

  • NATO is not expected to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance at the Washington Summit.
  • On the night of 9-10 July, US President Joe Biden announced that Ukraine would receive more Patriot air defence missile systems. European Pravda reported that President Biden's announcement of new Patriot air defence systems for Ukraine mostly referred to systems previously known about, with only one truly new system being provided by the US, along with several shorter-range systems.
  • Later, the White House elaborated on what other air defence systems they would provide to Ukraine.
