Ukraine downs 7 ballistic missiles, 1 Oniks missile, 3 Banderol drones and 222 Russian UAVs, but strikes recorded

Russia attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles, two anti-ship missiles and 258 strike drones on the night of 26-27 August. Ukrainian air defence downed 233 Russian aerial assets.

Details: The Air Force reported that Russia had launched two Oniks anti-ship missiles from temporarily occupied Crimea, Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles from Russia's Bryansk and Kursk oblasts and 258 Shahed attack UAVs (around a third of which were jet-powered), Gerbera drones, S8000 Banderol drones and Parodiya decoy drones.

The drones were launched from Kursk, Millerovo, Oryol and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia and temporarily occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea.

The main targets of the Russian attack were Odesa, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.

Ukrainian aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units as well as mobile fire groups have been involved in repelling the attack.

Early reports as of 09:00 indicated that Ukrainian air defence had shot down or jammed one Oniks anti-ship missile, seven Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, three S8000 Banderol drones and 222 Russian UAVs of various types in the south, north, east and centre of Ukraine.

Hits by Russian aerial weapons were recorded at 15 locations and debris from downed aerial assets landed at 11 locations.

The Air Force added that some Russian weapons have failed to reach their targets and that information concerning them is still being verified.

The Russian attack is still ongoing, as several UAVs remain in Ukrainian airspace.

• In summer 2026, Ukraine has been facing an acute shortage of anti-ballistic missiles for its air defence systems. The military leadership subsequently decided to restrict information in morning reports on the number of Russian ballistic missiles launched and destroyed during large-scale combined attacks.
• On 26 August, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that following recent meetings in the NB8 and Coalition of the Willing formats, Ukraine had received "a few missiles" for Patriot systems as well as AIM missiles, but stressed that more are needed.
