Russian foreign minister again talks of Anchorage "understanding", says Russia ready to return to it

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that Russia is ready to return to the "understanding" that Moscow claims was reached in Anchorage between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Details: Lavrov said Russia believes an understanding was reached in Anchorage and is ready to return to it.

Lavrov claimed that Russia was not suffering from a "lack of trust" and was ready to continue negotiations on a settlement of the war in Ukraine, but said that agreements must be honoured.

He also claimed that Europeans are preparing for war with Russia. Lavrov said that "metastases of Nazism" are evident among EU and NATO member states, particularly in Germany.

Previously: On 15 September, Lavrov claimed that Russia "would have already been living without war for a year" if the US had not "backed away from the agreements" supposedly reached in Alaska in August 2025.

Background:

• US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin met at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska, on 15 August 2025. The meeting ended without an agreement or the announcement of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
• Bloomberg reported that during a subsequent conversation with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump said Putin continued to demand the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the entirety of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts but was prepared to freeze the front line in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts.
• On 15 June 2026, Lavrov said Russia was expecting another visit from the US president's special envoys and wanted to hear how Washington planned to implement what Moscow described as agreements on ending Russia's war against Ukraine reached between Putin and Trump in Anchorage.
• US Secretary of State Marco Rubio subsequently told journalists that no agreements on Ukraine had been reached at the Trump-Putin summit the previous year. He later said that the approach proposed by Russia in Anchorage had failed because it was unacceptable to Ukraine.
