According to Zelenskyy: "I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Brent Renaud who lost his life while documenting the ruthlessness and evil inflicted upon Ukrainian people by Russia."

Details: The letter says that Renaud lost his life while "documenting human tragedy, devastation and suffering of the millions of Ukrainians," travelling to the most dangerous war zones to do so.

Zelenskyy emphasised that the people of Ukraine, "who are fighting against the Russian regime," are mourning with the journalist’s family.

"May Brent’s life, service and sacrifice inspire generations of people all around the world to stand up in the fight for the forces of light against forces of darkness," the letter concludes.

Background:

  • On 13 March, Russian troops shot Brent Renaud, the 51-year-old American journalist who has worked for The New York Times, in Irpin, in the Kyiv region. That day, two more correspondents were wounded in Irpin.
  • In Ukraine, Brent was working on a TIME Studios project about the global refugee crisis.
  • Zelenskyy said that the death of Brent Renaud was the outcome of a deliberate and planned attack of the Russian troops.
