Airborne landings and border patrols: new Russian and Belarusian aviation drills start in Belarus

Joint tactical flight drills of the aviation units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus and Russia have begun in Belarus on 16 January.

Quote: "Joint tactical flight drills of the aviation units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation, which are part of the aviation component of the regional grouping of troops (forces), have started."

Details: The ministry has reported that the military formation of the Russian Aerospace Forces is taking part in the exercises.

The Belarusian Ministry of Defence has stated that the main goal of the exercises is to increase interoperability during joint training and combat missions.

Russians and Belarusians plan to train:

  • conducting aerial reconnaissance;
  • joint airspace patrolling along the border;
  • aviation support for troop groups;
  • tactical airborne landing;
  • cargo delivery and evacuation of wounded.

The Belarusian Ministry of Defence emphasised that all airfields and military training grounds of the Air Force and Air Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Belarus are being used for the exercise.

Background: 

  • On 15 January, Belaruski Hajun reported that at least eight fighter jets and four cargo planes had arrived from Russia at the military airfield in Baranavichy, Belarus.
  • On 8 January, 12 Russian Aerospace Forces helicopters arrived in Belarus.
  • The same day, the Belarusian Defense Ministry announced that Russia and Belarus would hold a joint tactical flight exercise from 16 January to 1 February.
