John Kirby, White House National Security Council Coordinator, has said that if the US Congress refuses to approve further assistance to Ukraine, it could have "catastrophic consequences".

"But our allies and partners are also closely observing our actions because the US leadership has provided critical support to Ukraine.

We have led the world not only in our own contributions, but in our efforts to coordinate contributions of aid to Ukraine from other countries."

Details: Kirby said it is evident that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are closely monitoring this [providing assistance to Ukraine].

Answering the question of what would happen if Congress refused to approve further assistance to Ukraine, Kirby emphasised that America’s position as the leader of aid efforts would be undermined, leading some countries to reconsider their contributions.

"And this could have potentially catastrophic consequences for Ukraine," Kirby pointed out.

Background:

  • In a meeting with US congressional leaders and heads of relevant committees on Wednesday, Joe Biden called for the prompt unblocking of funding for further assistance to Ukraine. The Senate is expected to consider an agreement on southern border security and funding for Ukraine next week.
  • The bill envisages over US$60 billion in support for Ukraine, US$14 billion for Israel, and the same amount for measures to counter illegal migration on the US’s southern border.
  • The White House has previously stated that it has no more money for further military support for Ukraine until it is approved by the US Congress.
  • Key aides to US President Joe Biden warned Congress during a closed-door meeting that Ukraine would face considerable challenges at the front if no additional military aid is approved.
