Quote: "The whole civilised world must see the conditions in which the wounded and maimed defenders of Mariupol are living, and do something!

[They are living] in totally unsanitary conditions, with open wounds bandaged with non-sterile remnants of bandages, without the medicines they need or even food.

We call on the UN and the Red Cross to show their humanity and reaffirm the basic principles on which they were founded: to save wounded people who are no longer combatants.

The servicemen you see in these photos, and hundreds more at the Azovstal plant who are seriously injured, defended Ukraine and the entire civilised world at the cost of their own health. Are Ukraine and the international community now unable to protect and take care of them?"

Details: The photographs show that some of the soldiers have amputated upper or lower limbs, deformed jaws and faces, as well as deep bullet or shrapnel wounds that require qualified surgical intervention in a disinfected room.

The Azov Regiment is demanding the immediate evacuation of the wounded to a safe place where they will be provided with qualified medical care.

Background:

  • On the evening of 7 May, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian authorities, together with international organisations, were planning to evacuate the wounded military and medical personnel from Azovstal.
  • On 10 May, as a result of the air bombardment and assault on Azovstal by Russian forces, the number of seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers increased. The commanders issued a plea not to delay the process of evacuating the wounded, as they need urgent medical care.
  • According to the military, there are many dead bodies under the rubble, which are starting to decompose due to the warm air temperature and poisoning everything around them.
  • The commanders of the Azov Regiment who are defending the territory of Azovstal say that they still have weapons to repulse the Russian invaders.

The head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Onufriy, appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to allow the military to safely leave Azovstal.
